The International Falls School Board in April recognized Elks Lodge 1599 students of the month for May at Falls High School. Council OKs police investigator

International Falls Police Department will soon have an investigator, but no additional staff. The Falls City Council last week agreed with Police Chief Mike Kostiuk’s recommendation to fill the vacancy of investigator created with the recent ratification of the collective bargaining agreement.

Still ice?

The ice on Rainy Lake remained in place on Dove Island on Monday, as the rain and wind rolled in. Saturday marks the Minnesota walleye fishing opener. Boats will be able to ply the waters in some places, but others are expected to be locked in by ice.

District seeks new site for ALC

With the Backus Community Center Board’s decision not to renew a lease with the International Falls School District, the Alternative Learning Center needs a new space before the next school year. The subject was briefly discussed last week when an audience member raised concern at the Falls City Council meeting.

Filings for county, state open

Candidates for county offices, state and federal offices may file for those positions from May 17-31. Three districts in the Koochiching County will elect commissioners: District 1 commissioner, now held by Wade Pavleck, who announced he will not seek reelection; District 2, now represented by Kevin Adee; and District 4 commissioner, now held by Jason Sjoblom.
