Through no fault of my own, it has come to my attention that May is Older American Month. This gave me pause. Let me see if I have this straight. May is a month. I get that. For Older Americans. Um, what the what?!
Question: We were driving down the interstate the other day and I was passed by a vehicle and I noticed the front passenger had their feet up on the front dash. This was a newer vehicle so I know there are air bags and this got me wondering if this was legal.
On the heels of recent rough weather and on the eve of fishing opener, our Good Lord and good community made a good day for a good man and his family - Tom ‘Mr. D’ Drazenovich Field Dedication took place, just North of Highway #2 here at those oncegrand rapids of our dandy river Mississippi.
A few week ago the Courier and some of our sister newspapers owned by CherryRoad Media in Arkansas had a visit from the new Vice President of Growth and Development, Lee Bachlet. I proudly discussed the Courier and our community. I explained that we strive to cover local news, and our people, all while fulfilling our role of watchdog for the community. It’s a delicate balance. The newspaper has to have the backs of local residents and support the school, local governments and businesses. I like to think of the newspaper as a vehicle to help people in the community. The role of the newspaper should be about doing what you can to help solve problems in the town and county where it resides. It’s about supporting the community by shining a light on what is right and what needs to be fixed. It’s challenging work, especially if an entity tries to throw up a roadblock to transparency that is a right given to the public.
District 5 - Eveleth area Monday CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) reports area lakes (Rainy, Kabetogama, Namakan, Crane, and Sandpoint lakes) are at record-high flood levels and are expected to continue to rise for another week. People are reminded that a “nowake” ordnance is in place within 300 feet of the shore.
If you wander outside one day with your morning coffee and are greeted by the forlorn mews of an abandoned cat or kittens, you might be tempted to hope they will just “go away.” However, ignoring them will only make the situation worse. A dumped pregnant cat may shortly have kittens beneath your porch.
Ask Amy: Granddad’s rough-housing leads to tears Dear Amy: Recently my children and I were with my in-laws (their grandparents) at a crowded event where I relied on my father inlaw to supervise my son (age 4) while I was with my toddler daughter. My father in-law tries to connect with my son by “being silly,” which for him means nose pinching, tickling, tug-of-war while holding hands, and general rough-housing and clownish behavior.
With warmer weather and May being Arbor Month, now is a great time to plant a tree, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. “Minnesotans across the state can plant trees now to support resilient community forests into the future,” said Jennifer Teegarden, cooperative forest management outreach specialist.
