With newcomers and familiar faces taking seats at state, county and local governments, we urge a getting to know one another period. Each of these positions carry great responsibilities and will be counted upon by many to represent our views and ensure our needs are met, as it comes to level of government.

Cut budget before increasing tax

To the citizens of Koochiching County: My taxes are going up 79 percent this year. The part I like is the fact that I must pay the Rural Fire Protection Association fire fees of $90 annually, yet the county does not plow my road in the winter, I must plow it or the fire trucks couldn’t get to my home to fight the fire.

Winter’s knock

Dick Winter hit us hard this past week, here at dandy Mississippi’s once-grand rapids on Edge of the Wilderness. Heavy West-to-East moving storm after a week has left us some 16 inches of white stuff so far—above early ice layers; sub-zero temps coming next, plus more snow for Christmas.

‘Legacy’ grants support history projects

Ranier and the Ernest Oberholtzer Foundation are among the newest recipients of 35 Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Small Grants, totaling $304,444 in 19 counties. The Minnesota Historical Society awards the small grants, of $10,000 and less, quarterly to help nonprofits, educational organizations, government units and federally recognized tribes to preserve and share Minnesota history.
