Pride march focus on inclusion

Speakers at the Borderland Pride March Saturday focused on the need to welcome all to the sister communities on the international border in order to help each grow.Jeff Olson, Falls High School Class of 1988 and owner of Dirty Knees Soap Co., spoke of returning to live and grow a business in his hometown.At graduation, he said he’d never have believed he would return to the Falls in his 50s.“And I never imagined I would attend a Pride March at Smokey Bear Park,” he said, adding it’s an indication of how far the community and world has come in those years since high school.“Pride is about celebrating diversity and inclusion,” he told the group.

Recognizing survivorsThe Rainy Lake North Stars played a doubleheader against the Roseau Royals Sunday, June 9, losing both games 1-6 and then 0-12.The next game is Saturday, June 15, against the Bemidji Blue Ox in Bemidji.The North Stars will hold a cancer survivor recognition ceremony at Scheela Field in International Falls with a “Strike out Cancer” game versus the Hibbing Miners on Sunday, June 16, at 11:45 a.m.Survivors are invited to fill out a form on the Rainy Lake North Stars Facebook page to attend the game so they can be recognized.The North Stars will hold a Bingo fundraiser at 7 p.m.

D-Day, military stories shared

All were invited to share stories about their connection D-Day on Thursday, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Normandy invasion, a pivotal event toward ending World War II that involved more than 167,000 troops with about 4,000 allied soldiers dying, and more wounded.“It was the beginning of the end of World War II,” said VFW 2948 Commander Scott Jonson.The event included a ceremony, followed by sharing stories about World War II, D-Day and military service.Jan Johnson, an active member of the auxiliary, spoke about her dad who was on Omaha Beach in the invasion, starting her presentation with an address to the soldiers on D-Day prior to the invasion by Pres.
