Frozen lake plan revised; Comment encouraged until June 28

A revised alternative of Voyageurs National Park’s Frozen Lake Surface Use Plan includes the potential for more miles of ice roads and would allow motor vehicles to be used on all park-established ice roads, parking areas associated with ice roads, and Kabetogama Lake’s developed shore.Alternative 3 would allow ice shelters to “be placed anywhere on frozen lake surfaces within the project area” and “all permanent ice shelters could be left in place as long as they adhere to all state regulations.” Transportation of an ice shelter not associated with an NPS-established ice road would be conducted by snowmobile.A motor vehicle, in the plan, is every vehicle that is self-propelled and every vehicle that is propelled by electric power, but not operated on rails or water, except an electric bicycle, a snowmobile, and a motorized wheelchair.
