Volunteers needed for Lunch Buddies

STAFF REPORTThis year’s Lunch Buddies mentoring program at Falls Elementary School needs volunteers.United Way of Northeastern Minnesota is recruiting mentors to match with local elementary students for this coming school year’s Lunch Buddies mentoring program.The program matches first through fourth grade students with screened, trained volunteer mentors to share one lunch break each week during the school year.Mentors are screened through an application, interview, and background check and receive training before meeting with their mentees.

IFBC: 20 years strong

Have you noticed a few bass boats these days in our community?Many are preparing for the 20th anniversary of the International Falls Bass Championship, a catch and release tournament that has grown into a community festival.The 2023 and 2022 IFBC champs Bill Godin, Devlin, Ontario, and Bryan Gustafson, Kenora, Ontario, will return to defend their title, won last year with 41.73 pounds over the 2-day fishing contest.In second place was Steve Sandberg and Scott Sandberg followed by Tony Jackson and Ian Waterer, both teams with just more than 40 pounds each.In the 60-team fishing tournament, first place in the IFBC takes home $10,000, with second place at $5,500 and third awarded $3,000.The fishing tournament has grown a weeklong event at Smokey Bear Park, offering a medallion hunt, boat parade, craft show, motorcycle and car show, kids’ fishing tournament, food trucks, live entertainment, fun runs/walks, activities for the little people and more.Events surrounding the fishing tournament kick off Monday, when the first medallion hunt clues are posted and is followed by Wednesday’s Elks Burger Baskets with the Anglers.On Thursday, arts and crafts vendors open in the festival market area, and the 6 p.m.

Building on empathy

For many, it’s hard to imagine your children going to bed hungry or making a choice between paying the electric bill and buying your child glasses.About 40 people got the chance last week to take part in a three-hour Community Action Poverty Simulation at the invitation of hosts Melanie Mattsen, deacon at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, and Amy Mortenson, support specialist with KOOTASCA Community Action.The simulation was facilitated by Sue Monson, child care programs manager/Poverty Simulation Team, MAHUBE OTWA Community Action Inc.“There are so many aspects of what to get out of it,” Mortenson said of the simulation.
