Practice makes perfect. The old saying is on the mark for just about everything, but is especially true in an emergency, when seconds count and people’s lives could be on the line. The Rainy Lake Medical Center campus and pharmacy conducted a three-day active shooter training culminating in a drill that was meant to feel real. And it did feel real when Mike Marturano, of Bullseye Safety & Training in Duluth, walked through the halls firing a pistol loaded with blanks toward the floor, prompting staff to react as they had been trained: initiating emergency procedures, scattering, shouting “active shooter,” calling 911 and getting out of the building if possible. As Marturano moved through the building, firing the gun, he checked doors to patient rooms, bathrooms and offices.
