Developing projects on Highway 11 east have caused concern about traffic issues, bringing a review of the planned entry to the new border crossing station there.Seth LaRoque, Government Services Administration project manager, last week presented an update of the project to the Koochiching County Board, which requested it.He told the board once the new port is built and operational, traffic will be rerouted to the new port while the existing building is demolished, and rail lines moved.Construction is expected to start in spring 2025 and is funded by federal programs. He said the finished project should be something the community is proud of.Board members, local hospital and paper mill representatives, said shifting the entrance from its current location to Highway 11 east has raised concern.Brian Rauzi, Rainy Lake Medical Center, reiterated concerns about emergency vehicle access to the hospital after it is built just east of the entrance to the planned border crossing.LaRoque said he understands the concern and has contacted an official with the Minnesota Department of Transportation, who should lead the discussion about traffic issues there.Lori Lyman, representing Packaging Corporation of America, discussed truck traffic and a pinch at what’s called “the Burner Road” with logging trucks seeking the scale, and trailers requiring parking.“Traffic control is a huge concern,” she said.
