Leave deer fawns alone

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources asks that people avoid disturbing or touching deer fawns, which are born around this time of year.Most fawns are born in mid-May to mid-June, and fawns do not attempt to evade predators during their first few weeks of life.

Honoring our fallen heroes

Monday’s Memorial Day services were held around Borderland, drawing people to local cemeteries to watch as local color guards presented arms and colors and speakers talked of the fallen heroes of our military.The day is set aside to remember, honor and respect those who died in active military service are remembered.

Voyageurs National Park’s summer hours of operation for the park’s three visitor centers have been put in place.Summer hours at the centers are 9 a.m.

Border crossing traffic issues raised

Developing projects on Highway 11 east have caused concern about traffic issues, bringing a review of the planned entry to the new border crossing station there.Seth LaRoque, Government Services Administration project manager, last week presented an update of the project to the Koochiching County Board, which requested it.He told the board once the new port is built and operational, traffic will be rerouted to the new port while the existing building is demolished, and rail lines moved.Construction is expected to start in spring 2025 and is funded by federal programs.He said the finished project should be something the community is proud of.Board members, local hospital and paper mill representatives, said shifting the entrance from its current location to Highway 11 east has raised concern.Brian Rauzi, Rainy Lake Medical Center, reiterated concerns about emergency vehicle access to the hospital after it is built just east of the entrance to the planned border crossing.LaRoque said he understands the concern and has contacted an official with the Minnesota Department of Transportation, who should lead the discussion about traffic issues there.Lori Lyman, representing Packaging Corporation of America, discussed truck traffic and a pinch at what’s called “the Burner Road” with logging trucks seeking the scale, and trailers requiring parking.“Traffic control is a huge concern,” she said.

Highway 53 roundabout construction starts

Construction of a roundabout at Highway 53 and County Road 332 in International Falls starts June 5, reports the Minnesota Department of Transportation.The project was timed to begin after the last day of school at the Falls School District.Through traffic on Highway 53 will be maintained throughout the project, but a detour of County Road 332 will be required.
