With May recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, a number of local organizations as part of the Mental Health Advisory Council are taking the opportunity to remind people that improving mental health is as important as improvement physical health.Among those efforts are a Community Picnic set for May 23, said Pete Kalar, a member of the Koochiching Warrior Initiative, which is part of the council.The picnic is hosted by the Koochiching County Mental Health Advisory Council, a partnership with Northland Counseling Center, the Koochiching Warrior Initiative, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2948 and others.All are invited to the free picnic that starts at 4 p.m.

International Falls will make a bid to host Hockey Day Minnesota, after garnering the necessary financial pledges.The local organizing committee announced last week it will submit the bid to the Minnesota Wild.“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the local businesses for their generous donations, and we are deeply appreciative of the overwhelming support received from both the International Falls area and Fort Frances,” said Nikki Skifstad, chair of the International Falls Hockey Day MN Bid Committee.”The committee had done its homework and knows the selection process is rigorous and often spans multiple years, the Skifstad said, on behalf of the committee.“And while we acknowledge that most host cities aren’t selected in the first year, we remain open and committed to the opportunity to host Hockey Day MN whenever it may arise.”With the ongoing support of local businesses and the community, committee members are confident in the ability to host an exceptional event and are eagerly looking forward to showcasing the true spirit of hockey in the north, she said.For more information or to offer support, please contact the bid committee at ifallshockeydaymn@gmail.com.Hockey Day Minnesota originated in 2007 by the Minnesota Wild to celebrate the game that has made Minnesota “the State of Hockey.”It is produced in partnership with Bally Sports North, Minnesota Hockey, and the respective local community that serves as host each year.The event will take place in Shakopee in 2025.
Bronco Kelby Anderson continued her winning streak May 10 by taking first place with a 7 over par 79 at the 18-hole Hibbing Invitational at Mesaba Country Club in Hibbing.Both the Bronco boys and girls varsity golf teams competed.The boys finished the invite in ninth place overall with a team score of 379.The top finishers for the boys were:• Zach Youso 88• Paxton Sivonen 95• Landan Snyder 95• Adley Deedrick 101• Gage Wallander 105• Tyler Hedlund 108The boys and girls golf team had a busy day on Thursday, May 9.Anderson shot an 18-holes score of 1 under 71 to take first place at the varsity girls meet in the Rock Ridge Invitational at Virginia Golf Course.The varsity boys competed in a 9-hole East Range Conference meet at Hoyt Lakes.

The Bronco softball team won on the road Monday against Warroad, 14-2.Gracie Swenson was on the mound allowing 6 hits and 2 runs and throwing 6 strikeouts.Lola Valenzuela led the team at the plate with 2 hits, 3 runs and an RBI and her teammate Neva Kokesh chipped in at the plate with 3 hits (two doubles), 2 runs, and 2 RBI’s.The Bronco softball team celebrated senior day Saturday, May 11, honoring the seniors with a 17-0 win over Duluth Marshall.The team features three of the seniors: Gracie Swenson, Hattie Ulrich, and Lola Valenzuela.Swenson had a great game on the mound pitching 9 strikeouts and only allowing 1 hit.She has committed to Southwest Minnesota State University to continue playing softball.Ulrich was only on the Broncos for one season, transferring after Indus School was closed.
