Council wonders about county action

Action last week by the Koochiching County Board frustrated International Falls city officials this week. The county board April 23 voted unanimously “to pursue a subordinate taxing district to support the city of International Falls Ambulance service,” said the minutes.County Administration Director Adam Coe told the board a subordinate taxing district is different from an ambulance taxing district. An ambulance taxing district would be established jointly with the city and would have a separate board with taxing authority.

Minnesota moms: Take the fishing challenge

Moms who live in Minnesota are invited to join a free virtual fishing challenge Saturday, May 11, through Sunday, May 12, during Take a Mom Fishing Weekend, when all Minnesota moms can fish without purchasing a fishing license. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is partnering with the Student Angler Organization and Women Anglers of Minnesota to host the challenge. To participate in the Mother’s Day weekend fishing challenge, moms simply need to join the Facebook group called “Minnesota Moms Fishing Challenge 2024” and post one photo of each fish they catch. All participants who submit one or more fish photos will have their name entered in a random drawing for prizes provided by the Student Angler Organization and their partners, including gift cards for SCHEELS and Lund.

Meeting the folks

I went out West to Idaho and Washington to do my show in Boise (soft s) and Spokane, and was surprised by how vibrant, bustling, handsome both cities are, and walked out onstage and sang Van Morrison’s “These are the days of the endless summer, these are the days, the time is now” and they seemed to like it okay, so I hummed a note and they sang “America the Beautiful” with me and then we did “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” for the Republicans in the crowd and they sang it full-out, four parts, and then, for contrast, “John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt” and we were on our way. It’s an age of dread, the news perpetually discouraging, TV and media merchandising ugliness, and either you join the Greek chorus of gloom or you go with the American choir of cheerful resolve, and I choose cheerfulness.

Lessons from Smokey

Falls Elementary students last week got a chance to see for themselves what Smokey Bear and his fight against wildfires is all about. On Friday, members of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources talked about fire with students, who then got their picture taken with Smokey Bear. The students also went outside to see and experience some of the equipment the DNR staff use to fight wildland fires.
