Seasonal draw

This past weekend’s open water walleye and lake sturgeon seasons on the Rainy River was one of the busiest in years, with more than 500 boats per day locally.The seasons in normal years offer some of the first open water fishing in the state, and the warm recent temperatures probably played a role as well.The walleye catch-and-release season on the Rainy River ended this past weekend.Lake sturgeon harvest season, with one fish per year, runs from April 24-May 7, and July 1-Sept.

The International Voyageurs Snowmobile Club’s annual hot dog roast raised $445 and was matched by the club’s own funds making a total donation of $890 to the Koochiching County Food Access, which is addressing the rural food crisis in Koochiching County.KCFA Director Christina Daniel-McKee has said the local community, like other communities across the state, are seeing a rise in use and need in recent months.KCFA operates a food shelf, a school pantry program and a food distribution program.

Bandshell fire ‘incendiary’

International Falls officials say a fire incendiary in nature damaged the Irving “Pete Peterson Bandshell in Smokey Bear Park on Sunday.City officials in a statement said they are working with those involved to further determine details of the fire.The National Fire Protection Association defines an incendiary fire as a fire intentionally ignited in an area or under circumstances where and when there should not be a fire.No further details about the fire were provided in a statement released Monday by Fire Chief Adam Mannausau, City Administrator – Betty Bergstrom, and Public Works Director Ted Brokaw.The investigation is considered open and fire officials will continue to work with the International Falls Police Department and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal.People are asked to keep their distance from the structure for their personal safety.The iconic bandshell was built in the 1940s.Meanwhile, city officials say the fire was reported at 1:05 p.m.
