Ankle monitors for Huber release

Inmates using the Huber law to leave the Koochiching County jail for work will begin wearing ankle monitors for release.The Koochiching County Board last week approved raising the Huber fee from $25 to $30 per day to cover the cost of the ankle monitors, at $10 per day.Sheriff Perryn Hedlund told the board the ankle monitors would allow for better monitoring of inmates while they are out of jail, noting the release is a liability for the county.Inmates using the Huber law for work release will prepay one week’s fee with the balance due upon release, said Jail Administrator Carrie Geiss.Geiss said tests of the ankle monitoring device show they provide specific locations of the person wearing the monitor, including her location when she visited family in Canada.“Even with no cell phone service, it was able to track,” she told the board Jan.
