January may be frigid, but the cold air means clearer skies for viewing the jewels scattered among the iconic winter stars.By the 7th, hourglass-shaped Orion, the hunter, and all its companion constellations will be up in the southeast at 8 p.m.

Berries and meat

Many Homesteaders who came to our area in many cases felt “Nature will provide sustenance;” seldom did the “free harvest” not require sustainable effort.Every spring, children worked with their parents in the maple syrup harvest.

Early buds

FHS Elks students of the month

The International Falls School Board and Elks Lodge 1599 recently recognized Adley Deedrick and Preston Benedix as December students of the month.Kevin Grover, district superintendent and member of Elks Lodge 1599, provided the following about the students.Adley DeedrickAdley Deedrick, parents are Danyelle and Benjamin Deedrick.

Borderland Mustangs hit the mats

Borderland Mustang Wrestling has added a second wrestling room, which may have caused a bit of a delay to the season but drawn more wrestlers.Coach Jeremy Mann said about 50 young people are taking part in the third year of the program this year, which is up for last year’s 30 or so wrestlers.Mann believes it’s an indication of approval from parents and other folks in the community.

Ice caution

Sheriff Perryn Hedlund urges people to use extreme caution should they choose to venture out on local lakes and rivers.“Under normal circumstances, no ice is considered 100 percent safe,” he said.

RLMC plans for new facility

A new clinic and hospital planned for property owned by Rainy Lake Medical Center between Rainy River and Highway 11 east should take the community into the next 50 years.“It’s exciting,” said Robb Pastor, RLMC CEO.“The goal of the new facility is to make sure we’ve got something that will last another 50 years, with room to expand,” he added.Also a part of the goal for the new facility is to bring more services here so people don’t have to travel, he said.
