Local student Caleb Levene, son of Christina Morrison and Shannon Kremer, International Falls, recently received the North Dakota State University Provost Award.The award recognizes students who have a 3.65-3.799 high school grad point average or have scored a 25-28 on the ACT, American College Testing, and have a 3.5 or higher high school GPA.Levene entered NDSU in the fall and is majoring in computer engineering.

Falls officials talk ambulance

Council sets 2024 levy

International Falls City Council Monday approved collecting 9.03 percent more from property taxpayers in 2024 than in did this year.The approval sets the final levy to be collected at $3.9 million, an increase of $324,891.Councilors noted the final 2024 budge includes full funding of $351,000 to the Falls International Airport, which it jointly owns with Koochiching County, ending talks of cutting the funding in 2024.Mayor Harley Droba said the council rolled back all city department expenses to the 2023 level and were able to decrease the levy from the proposed 9.5 percent increase to the 9.03 percent increase.Droba said budget talks by the council have and will lead to larger conversations in the community about how to fund ambulance services and the airport in the future.Meanwhile Monday’s meeting, as noted by Droba, may have been the largest in years, and included, among other things, approval of the:• Application for a state grant to help support preconstruction of a warehouse and transportation logistics facility in the multimodal district proposed by Onesimus Management Group LLC.• First reading of a rubbish and garbage ordinance, which only requires action or change by residents who have received blight tickets related to garbage.
