Local call for bridge changes

A resolution calling for the Canadian government to purchase, operate and construct a new toll-free bridge between International Falls and Fort Frances was approved by the Falls City Council Monday.The resolution comes after similar action in November by the Fort Frances council, which voted to lobby the federal government to buy the international bridge, reports Northern Ontario Business, a media outlet dedicated to the business community across Northern Ontario.The report said the council passed a motion, recognizing the financial impact on their constituents, that called on the federal government to negotiate the purchase of the international bridge from Aazhogan LP at a fair price, and that the federal government would impose minimal or no tolls and be responsible for the maintenance of the bridge.The Falls council’s resolution said it supports the government of Canada to:a) purchase the international bridge,b) maintain and operate the international bridge, with minimal or no tolls, andc) construct a new international bridge between International Falls and Fort Frances with support from the United States federal government, that will operate toll free.Mayor Harley Droba told the council that he’s spoken to federal officials about the bridge, including U.S.

City presents budget, levy

A few questions and comments were offered Monday about the International Falls proposed 2024 budget and levy, set now to collect 9.5 percent more than this year.City officials made clear the budget considered that night may change slightly as councilors consider whether to fund fully the city’s requested share as co-owners of the Falls International Airport.
