In Minnesota’s Nature

Memory can’t recall when this fine city at once-grand rapids of dandy Mississippi, on The Edge of the Wilderness, adopted its community slogan: “GRAND RAPIDS---It’s In Minnesota’s Nature.” But we’ve liked it since day one in 1979, spending summer weeks then months at Bass Lake’s old Idaho Avenue cabin address, downsizing from Idaho’s Snake River and relocating to Grand Rapids as our newly adopted hometown in 2018—another in a series of impressive papermill towns since 1967.This family has always been tuned in to outdoor adventure, focusing on hunter-gatherer outings spiced with woods, waters, mountains and such.

Raising awareness, dispelling myth

Homeless and Hunger Awareness Week is held nationally on the second week in November, bringing awareness of the onset of winter - the time being homeless and/or hungry becomes more difficult in much of the United States. In Borderland, however, cold weather often sets in before November, illustrating that the need to be aware of hunger and homelessness in our community is truly year around.“This is the time when people see we’re heading into winter, and heading into the holidays; please be thinking about people who are not housing secure and the challenges with hunger we have in our country,” urged Ariana Daniel, executive director of Servants of Shelter of Koochiching County.SOS describes itself on its website as “a community-based nonprofit 501(c)3 that upholds the dignity of persons in need of temporary shelter, permanent supportive housing, supportive services, and resources.”Daniel urged people to direct anyone experiencing housing instability to SOS before they have no home.

Spreading warmth

An annual gathering by a few local fellas who bill themselves as “the most handsome guys in Borderland” will help keep Koochiching County children warm.Members of the Knights of Columbus Council #1540 this week delivered to Koochiching County Health and Human Services a total of 18 cases of coats, totaling 216 coats, for the agency to give to local people in need before winter sets in.The group got together to deliver the coats and have a little fun in the process.
