Frank Bowman was the first to ride a bicycle across the Crane Lake portage. It was in the fall of 1896. He reported the portage, 27-miles long, “personalized discomfort.” The Rainy Lake Journal reported that he beat the stage team that was following him by several hours though he testified he did not try to hurry.

April is the last month of school year programming, although we do creep a bit into May. The silent book club will meet on Monday, April 14 at 6:30. Elementary Fun will have its last session on Wednesday, April 30. Storytime will continue for two more weeks until May 8. Crafters’ Café will continue through May on alternate Tuesdays with the next opportunity to craft together being Tuesday, April 22 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Thoughtful gift recently arrived for this wheelchair captive, ex-adventurer from old friend and co-employee at former Boise Cascade Corporation. Mary sent 1996 Steven Ambrose book, “Undaunted Courage,” reporting “Awesome Adventures” experienced by Captain Meriwether Lewis during his outdoor and political career with whiffs of danger.
