Mr. Joe Mannausau

Joe and his brother Russel bought an upright Stickney gasoline engine, a feed grinder and a saw rig. The engine had two flywheels one on each side; it was started by turning them. The gentleman they bought it from showed then how it started and other details about how it ran. Note: the boys nor their dad knew nothing about engines. So, one day they got everything lined up to grind feed and they couldn’t get it to start. Looking Back

Forrest Hess popped the hood from the 1974 Ski-Whiz parked among more than 100 other vintage sleds. As other riders passed by the 17-year-old on their way to the start of the “VintageSleds. com Live on Skis,” they raised an open hand for a high five with the young man. The line-up and start was carefully choreographed to allow Hess, the ride’s special guest, to lead the enthusiastic group on its way up Rainy Lake. Hess, who is battling cystic fibrosis, and his family took part in the ride as a result of the Western New York Chapter of Make-A-Wish, assisted by the Minnesota chapter. Hess excitedly showed people the hood of the John Deere sled he would soon mount for the ride. On it was painted his name and Make-A-Wish. The snowmobile had been renovated for Hess to use on the ride. And after the event, many of the riders signed it and presented it to Hess. Jim Saurdiff, local organizer of the ride and vintage sled aficionado, said he was pleased by the turnout.
