I couldn’t sleep last Saturday night due to anxiety caused by rewinding various lowlights of my long life that hit me like a brick and I lay in bed and watched the hours go by as I contemplated my imminent demise leaving my dependents impoverished and homeless so when the day dawned I put on a suit and coat and I went around the block to the solemn 8 a.m. Mass rather than wait for the more festive 10:30 and walked through the bitter Minnesota cold into St. Mark’s Cathedral where a couple dozen souls sat, widely spaced apart, perhaps to guard against communicable disease, or maybe to avoid the Exchange of Peace after the absolution of our sins.

The city of International Falls received the official trademark certificate stating that it is the “Icebox of the Nation.” The city was gathering information to submit by a deadline today when officials were surprised to receive the certificate in the mail from the U.S. Trademark Office. Fraser, Colo., was battling International Falls over ownership of the federal trademark when it filed suit last year. International Falls officials believed it had the moniker. But when it was researched, it was discovered that the city had continued to renew the state trademark, but the federal trademark had lapsed. International Falls had an agreement with Fraser dating to 1989 when the cities agreed that International Falls would use the moniker and give Fraser $2,000. International Falls can prove that the city has used the moniker since 1948, that it had ownership of the moniker, and that the city continues to use it, Falls city attorney Joe Boyle said.
