Essentia Health is one of the top-performing health care systems in the state, according to the latest Minnesota Health Care Quality Report from Minnesota Community Measurement, or MNCM, a statewide resource for timely, comparable information on health care quality, costs and equity.

Local non-profits united against trafficking

While January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, our region is home to several agencies working year-round to prevent trafficking in our local communities. “This is one of those issues that we know affects communities of every size – this is not just happening in big cities,” said United Way of Northeastern Minnesota (UWNEMN) Executive Director Erin Shay.

Mister Joe Mannausau II Mister Joe was appreciative when real horsepower was replaced by tractors, cars, trucks, boat motors and other gasoline contrivances, but in his later years he wondered aloud if all the new mechanical things were taking the place of real manpower, leaving no work for a man to make a living. Joe philosophized that we are enjoying paradise now and not thinking of what it is going to be for the young folks that will be taking our place after we are gone.

Randy Kent Bernard

Randy Kent Bernard gained his Angel Wings on January 13, 2023 at his home in International Falls at the age of 64 from COPD. In recent years, Randy loved helping his neighbors with yard work, watching over his parents, riding his bike, taking the neighbor’s dog for walks, boating on Rainy Lake, spending time around bonfires, and last, but, not least, reading books.

Charles ”Chuck” Lessard

Charles “Chuck” Lessard, born Charles James Lessard on January 30th, 1949 to parents, Charles E. and Marian Lessard in International Falls, MN, passed away at his home on January 15th, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer. In Chuck’s early years, he attended St. Thomas parochial school from 1st through 8th grade. He then transferred to Falls Junior High and began his education in the public school system. While in high school he played baseball and was the lead singer in the Minor D’s band and has fond memories of playing at the Friday night dances. He graduated from high school in 1967. After high school, Chuck went to Duluth, MN and attended Duluth Area Institute of Technology, now referred to as Lake Superior College, to pursue a degree in Marketing.

The Littlefork Big Falls girls basketball team hosted North Woods Jan. 16, when the Grizzlies defeated the Vikings 89-16.

Looking Back

15 years ago More than 200 runners competed in a true-to-its-name “Freeze Yer Gizzard Blizzard Run” 5K and 10K races on Saturday. The temperature in International Falls was 20 below at the start of the race.
