Pass the salt

A moose kneels to lick salt from a highway southwest of International Falls Jan. 4 while her calf stands near. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reports that for the 11th year in a row, Minnesota's moose population of 3,440-6,780 animals remains stable. Although there is no statistically significant change in the estimated population relative to the last population survey, this year's estimated number of moose is the highest since 2011, when the population was midway through a steep decline.

Baker recognized for conservation

Mary-Jean Becker was recently honored as the Koochiching Soil and Water Conservation District Outstanding Conservationist at the annual meeting of the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Dec. 12-14 in Bloomington.

L-BF basketball

The Littlefork-Big Falls boys basketball team looked to continue their hot start to the season as they hosted the Greenway Raiders on Jan. 6. The Vikings led 36-23 at the half on their way to a 54-43 win. Tommy Larson led L-BF with 20 points.

During the threeday weekend, any Minnesota resident can go ice fishing for free if fishing with a child 15 years old or younger. Minnesotans 15 years old or younger don’t need fishing licenses any time of the year.
