Looking Back

The Bronco boys’ hockey team returned from a tournament in Rochester, MN, with three straight overtime victories and a firstplace trophy. The Broncos opened the Kiwanis/ Wells Fargo Classic with a 4-3 overtime win over the Richfield Spartans. The Broncos continued their tournament success with a 3-2 win over Rochester Lourdes. The championship game pitted the Broncos against the Albert Lea Tigers in and the Broncos emerged victorious despite much of the game play being dominated by the Tigers. The girls’ hockey team took thirdplace honors in the Kasson/Dodge County Girls Tournament this past weekend in Rochester. After a 7-3 victory over Fond du Lac, WI, the Broncos lost a game to St. Paul United by a score of 0-3. The girls rebounded from their loss to defeat the Central WI Storm 2-1 in overtime.

Naturally, I couldn’t resist writing about The Birchdale Area (aka) End of the Rainbow. I want to tell you about Mrs. Mae Smart. She was born in Minneapolis; her parents had come to Minneapolis from New York State. Her father Carl Buell was long prominent in educational opportunities and affairs of the Flour City. He was also an author and lecturer of more than local fame and enjoyed the friendship of many of the great men and women of the nation.

The new year opens with Venus climbing out of the sun’s afterglow. On Sunday, January 22, Saturn drops past Venus as Earth’s orbital motion sends the ringed planet tumbling into the sunset. Look for the pair of planets very low in the southwest just as the sky darkens.

Bronco hockey: 75 years

When asked what International Falls is known for, many people will likely respond with one word: Hockey Borderland will celebrate 75 years of the Bronco hockey program Jan. 13 during the home game in International Falls. In addition, alumni are invited to meet at the Border Bar Jan. 14 to reminisce.

July 13, 1952 December 21, 2022 Rodger Dean Brown was born on July 13, 1952, in Bigfork, MN, the son of Ralph and Faye (Fleming) Brown. Rodger was united in marriage to Cristine Kluck.

Carol Benike

Carol Benike passed away on December 25, 2022 at the Littlefork Care Center at the age of 85. She had battled Parkinson’s disease and resulting dementia for the past 18 years of her life.
