Gearing up for the Best Christmas Ever

Nominations for local families to receive the Borderland Best Christmas Ever are open until midnight Oct. 31. The program, also known as BCE, is a non-profit organization that aims to lift families that have fallen on tough times. It has been around since 2011. The local BCE site can be found at www.bcemovement. org Melanie and Gage Waskul were the 2021 recipients of Borderland Best Christmas Ever. Nominating a family for the 2022 program is simple, said local organizer, Amy Fox Basaraba. She and her then 7-year-old twins were recipients of the Best Christmas Ever while living in Cloquet in 2016, following her husband Troy’s unexpected death. The event overwhelmed Basaraba with gratitude and she wanted to bring the effort to International Falls, after moving back to her hometown in 2017, she said.

Our View: Community is important

Because recording our community’s history is a part of the duty of a newspaper, the Rainy Lake Gazette’s website has been changed to allow anyone to read obituaries at no cost. We consider it our service to the community to provide this information to all, and our digital technology has been updated to reflect this feature.

Ecklund understands veteran needs

Many legislators try to get away with paying lip service to veterans. Others will actually take time to listen to what would help veterans in our state. But Rep. Rob Ecklund is the real deal, championing solutions regarding housing, mental health, economic security, and so much more for those who’ve served the United States of America. Given he himself has served in the U.S. Marine Corps, his deep dedication to vets shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. During a time of wide divisions at both the state and U.S. Capitols, Rob has been able to cut through the partisanship, acrimony, and rhetoric to get things done. Everyone deserves a place to call home, and veterans’ homelessness is one of the most persistent problems we’ve worked to address. Rep. Ecklund successfully advanced historic investments this past session to address housing emergencies, short-term housing difficulties, and long-term pathways to a stable home for veterans. As a result, we will be in a better position than ever to end veterans’ homelessness in Minnesota.

Nearly North of Two: Border Bonds

NEARLY NORTH OF TWO Border Bonds Old adventurer here along with his longterm bride, sweetheart and best friend, made a long-overdue visit to Rainy River Country recently. Highway 6, main artery North of Highway 2 from Deer River up to that country, provided ample opportunity for personal reflection on a history of what bonds one here with that Borderland… 56 years ago last Labor Day weekend, just before graduate school engineering program, this newly-wed couple from Minnesota River Valley visited Baudette to first-time experience Rainy River and Lake of the Woods.
