GOP candidates focused on power

To the editor, Beguiling is a very interesting word: “to charm or enchant sometimes in a deceptive way.” At times we have a temptation to believe the unbelievable. The American conservative movement has experienced such temptations. Built on a foundation of greatness, its ideals have fallen short of its promises. President Reagan’s presidency from 1980 to 1988, is often hailed as the most accomplished of conservative governments. His economic policy was based on reducing taxes while increasing spending. The suggestion that lowering tax rates would increase tax revenues is obviously a fairy tale. Economics doesn’t work that way. Yet this idea appealed to conservatives. One of the reasons the idea was appealing is less taxes meant smaller government.
