The Koochiching County Board will Aug. 9 consider sending a letter to the International Joint Commission asking it to apply guidance to Canadian National Railway’s project to add additional tracks in Ranier. The request follows months of flooding on the Rainy Lake and Rainy River.

Crazy Days July 27 drew businesses, shoppers, and many others out in the community for the annual retail promotion. Organized by the International Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, the annual event was returned to its traditionally July date this year.
Lake levels on the Rainy Lake Basin of Voyageurs National Park have receded to the level allowable for the lifting of the nowake restriction on Rainy Lake within the park, effective Friday. As a precaution and courtesy, park staff encourage all boaters to reduce their wake when traveling near any docks or infrastructure to minimize further challenges related to flood recovery.
Last month, I wrote about companion planting in a vegetable garden with specific herbs and flowers to lessen potential problems with harmful pests and related diseases. Three of my favorites companion plants are versatile marigolds, aromatic alliums, and stalwart nasturtiums. I’ve been planting these reliable, easily maintained, and multi-purposed plants for many years in my gardens: ground, raised bed, and container.
