Farm Family of the Year

Joy, grief, fun, pain, excitement, fear, panic, and warmth: Just a few of the feelings that operating a family farm brings to each member – sometimes in quick succession. Bradley and Melody Nicholson’s family, Koochiching County’s 2022 Farm Family of the Year, know well those emotions.

Some like it hot

It’s hot out there. Real hot. How hot? Well, it’s since the 1980s, each decade has been warmer than the previous one. And, since there’s not a big, concerted push to do much about it, you should expect the trend to continue. It’s going to be hot. Smoking hot. Like the end of “Raiders of the Lost Arc” where the guy’s face melts off hot. Like Icarus hot.

Broncos take to the water

The Bronco Bass Fishing Team got on the water Sunday for the first time in more than two months to compete on Rainy Lake. There were some great bags of fish as three teams went over 19 pounds for their five bass and the difference between the top two teams was less than one ounce.

Jubilee brings music, more, to end of the rainbow

The weather mostly cooperated and the 2nd annual Birchdale Jubilee, which has replaced Pioneer Days, was a great success. The jubilee kicked off on Friday night with Band & Burgers, when Judith Nelson and Kerry Meyers cooked up burgers for the whole crowd while Sarah Mae & the Birkeland Boys from Duluth entertained everyone with their large selection of original songs plus a plethora of standard bluegrass and country music tunes.

New name, same services, faces

Dr. Joe and Jane Meyer will take over Burntside Consultants as Meyer Medical Services, with the same staff, serving seven counties and seven native tribes in Minnesota, and drawing from areas including the Twin Cities, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota.

Fish fundraiser

The Activities Program at Falls High School got a boost last week, thanks to supporters of the Purple Pride Fish Fry fundraiser. “The third annual Purple Pride Fish Fry was a huge success as over 400 fish baskets were served,” said Gordy Dault, Purple Pride chair and one of the official fish friers Thursday, July 14.

Coming in

It was a busy Wednesday a week ago at Rainy Lake Medical Center’s helipad. RLMC serves as a Level 4 trauma hospital, which allows it to stabilize people having strokes, heart attacks, traumas and other series medical emergencies, and then transport them via helicopter to another facility for higher level care, said Mickie Olson, RLMC marketing director. The number of helicopter transfers varies, she said; some days three or four helicopter transports occur, and some weeks no air transports are required. PHOTO BY ALAN BURCHELL
