Summer reading is here! Hope you caught our first week of programming with plenty more to come. The best part of all is that kids can earn up to eight free books this summer thanks to an unexpected donation from United Way.

Once in a lifetime

It might not have been on their bucket list, but it was a once-in-a-lifetime event. That’s how veterans Beth Johnson and Kathy Sikkila said they felt about attending the commissioning of the USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul combat ship.

Ecklund: Know your rights

As flood waters continue to devastate areas around the Rainy River basin, Rep. Rob Ecklund, DFL – International Falls, encourages residents in the region to be aware of their rights under Minnesota law as they assess the damage and work with insurance adjusters and contractors.

FAA awarded funds

Friends Against Abuse, International Falls, was a recent recipient of an Otto Bremer Trust grant. The advocacy organization will use the $60,000 for general operations to provide services to victims of crime in International Falls.

Research Brief: How wolf personalities can alter wetlands

U of M Can wolf personalities change ecosystems? According to the latest research from the Voyageurs Wolf Project, published in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, they can. Previous work by the Voyageurs Wolf Project – which is funded by the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) – demonstrates that wolves can alter the creation of wetlands by killing beavers.

High and dry
