Friday, May 27 15 years ago Memorial Day services were conducted today in cemeteries in Ray, Ericsburg, Kabetogama and International Falls. Welcome and master of ceremonies’ duties were fulfilled by Commander Terry Randolph.
The International Falls City Council last week approved the 2022 wages and benefits for nonunion position. Koochiching County Board in January set the minimum salary for the county’s elected officials for 2023.
The filing period for candidates seeking county, state and federal offices opened May 17 and will close May 31. Filings for cities and school boards locally open Aug.
The school year is almost over and summer is just around the corner. That means it is time to visit the public library and stock up for summer reading. I doubt anyone will argue that it has been a rough couple of years, so let’s all work together to support our youth and help them this summer have fun as well as learn and grow. The library has lots planned for summer (more on that next week).

Al Shannon shared this photo of a doe, placed by its mother at the entrance of Shannon’s Plumbing and Heating. A clear indication that all are welcome there. The doe and fawn were reunited later in the day, when she returned to the doorway, reports Shannon, sending another photo. Wildlife officials urge people who may find fawns that this time of the year to leave them alone, as in most cases the mother deer is nearby, even if she is out of sight. Young deer may be left alone for as long as three days. Does with fawns can also be aggressively protective, so best for humans and their pets to stay away for the safety of all involved.
Fast and reliable connectivity is coming to International Falls, thanks to a partnership between Koochiching County, Koochiching Technology Initiative, North Star Electric Cooperative and Midco. The three-phase project is expected to be complete in 2023, and will link 231 International Falls homes along Rainy Lake and Highway 11, including Tilson and Frank bays to Dove Island.
Part of the rebuilding of the International Falls Area Chamber of Commerce will include a financial audit, and the board of directors in a news release Thursday said the past president will repay funds that were misused.
Due to recent historic high-water levels within the Rainy Lake Watershed, Voyageurs National Park has closed some campsites and cancelled boat tours until June 18. Staff are concerned about visitor safety and availability of various amenities at the park campsites, houseboat sites, and day use sites.
