Rainy Lake ice out

Mark Trompeter, local pilot and Rainy Lake aficionado, was amazed during a flight Wednesday, May 11, that ice remained on the large lakes. He later that week reported that fellow pilot Tim Lessard flew over the big lake at about 5 p.m.

Borealis Bards: “Charlotte’s Web” May 27-29

Director Keri Norton and 30 local actors - the youngest age 8 - will perform Joseph Robinette’s adaptation of “Charlotte’s Web” at Backus Community Center. The performance is presented by the Borealis Bards, the community theater program of Backus Community Center, on the main stage at 7 p.m.

Road work begins

Work on Highway 53 in International Falls resumed on Monday, May 16, with landscaping and tree planting until June 1, followed by bench and kiosk installation. The projected completion of those projects is July 1, Minnesota Department of Transportation officials reported.

Indus Quilt Show revived

The annual tradition of the Indus Quilt Show was revived May 9, after a hiatus during the pandemic. The well-attended show was held in the Indus School Library and featured 38 quilts of various sizes and themes by local artists.

Friday, May 20 15 years ago The Mass of the Resurrection, along with full military rites, was given Friday, May 18, 2007, for Dr. James Alan Berlin, 60, formerly of International Falls, who passed away at his Britt home surrounded by his loving family.

CO Report International Falls

District 5 - Eveleth area Monday CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) reports fishing opener on Rainy Lake was the slowest in this officer’s career as far as number of anglers checked, mainly attributed to the high-water levels. The catch and release sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River continues to be good.

VNP placing markers

Voyageurs National Park staff are actively placing hazard markers and other buoys within park boundaries, staff reported Monday. Park staff will make every effort to place buoys in a timely manner for the 2022 summer season but ask boaters to keep in mind they are working with flood conditions.

Planting Fever

The Master Gardeners’ plant sale is coming up this weekend! It will be at the Beltrami County Fairgrounds on May 21st, from 9 to noon. It’s been such a beautiful May so far.
