Timing is everything

We grieve with the Borderland community over the decision by the ISD 363 School Board last week to close the Indus School July 1. While we understand the facts and figures behind the recommendation for closure, we’d hoped the board would have taken the hearing judge’s idea that they could take action to close the school at a time of their discretion and voted for July 1, 2024.

John Ross Slack

John Ross Slack The history of early logging days often was filled with rivalries and bitter contests over control of the logs and the rivers that provided transportation. Focus is on outdoors

Looking Back

The 2008 David Thompson Brigade flotilla of 160 canoeists will paddle through the Rainy River district to Pither’s Point Fort Frances. The visit is part of a historical reenactment that journeys 1,389 miles through four provinces in 63 days. The brigade is a bicentennial commemoration of explorer David Thompson (17701857). It is one of many events from 2007 to 2011 that celebrates the documenting of the Howse Pass in 1808 and the exploration that would eventually establish a trade route from Fort William to the western end of the Rocky Mountains. The trip began on May 10 at Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, and will conclude on July 12 at the Rendezvous festival of the Canadian fur trade at Fort Williams. The original Centennial Brigade visited Fort Frances in 1967 and some of the 160 canoeists were also in the 1967 flotilla.

Bob was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in 1949 as the first of four children of Eugene and Mamie Leggett. He spent the first 18 years of his life in International Falls and was involved in youth hockey and baseball. This was only the beginning of his love for sports.
