“STEVE” STEPHEN GUY RISSANEN

“Steve” Stephen Guy Rissanen, age 71 years of International Falls, died peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth on Thursday, March 23, 2023. He was born on October 3rd, 1951 in Virginia, Minnesota, the son of Norman and Allie (Valley) Rissanen. He was proud of his 100% Finnish heritage. He grew up in Big Falls and graduated from Littlefork /BF High School in 1969.

WENDY LOUISE (WALLS) FRANK

July 8, 1953 - March 23, 2023 Wendy Louise (Walls) Frank was born on July 8, 1953, in International Falls, the daughter of Norman “Stub” and Jean (Pelland) Walls. She was united in marriage to Roger Frank in 1974. The were married until 2021 when they divorced but remained good friends until her death.

LYNN SUSAN O’BRIEN

March 12, 1957 - March 13, 2023 Lynn Susan O’Brien passed away at Rainy Lake Medical Center in International Falls, Minnesota on March 13th, 2023, surrounded by all her loving family. Lynn was born March 12th, 1957, in New Rochelle, NY, the daughter of Martin and Mary (Smith) O’Brien.

Rainy River

The Rainy River baseball team improved to 9-9 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Western Tech on Monday afternoon. In Game 1, the Voyageurs started quickly scoring three runs in both the first and third innings of a 9-6 victory.

County moves on new jail plan

The Koochiching County Board Tuesday reiterated its plan to build a new jail facility. The board reaffirmed a resolution to build a 40 bed, approximately 22,700 feet jail located at the existing county government service site location.

At one time Fairland, Minn., was among other area communities that were considered for the county seat when Koochiching was formed. Mirriam Ollikkala’s first year of teaching was 1935-1936, The Fairland School was located about 25 miles south and west of Loman on the Black River Road.

Closure vote prompts new land idea

With a vote March 8 to begin the process to close the Indus School, a local effort known as “Save Our School” has gathered strength. Citing an operating loss, declining enrollment and cost savings to the district, the South Koochiching-Rainy River School Board, with schools in Indus and Northome, voted to begin the process to close the Indus School.
