At one time Fairland, Minn., was among other area communities that were considered for the county seat when Koochiching was formed. Mirriam Ollikkala’s first year of teaching was 1935-1936, The Fairland School was located about 25 miles south and west of Loman on the Black River Road.

So much can be accomplished when we understand and empathize with one another; it helps people – including the those we elect to represent us – accomplish their goals. Without that empathy, and perhaps a face-toface discussion, misconceptions, misunderstandings, and misinformation can help form decisions, whether that be about people, issues or decisions.

Closure vote prompts new land idea

With a vote March 8 to begin the process to close the Indus School, a local effort known as “Save Our School” has gathered strength. Citing an operating loss, declining enrollment and cost savings to the district, the South Koochiching-Rainy River School Board, with schools in Indus and Northome, voted to begin the process to close the Indus School.

Dark, waves, and snow at the gates of Brule Narrows

The distance from the University of Minnesota’s Minneapolis campus to the channel markers of Brule narrows on Rainy Lake has remained constant over the years. A few curves in the roads have been redesigned but the basics of heading north on I35, MN33, and US53 have stayed unchanged.

FHS Students of the Month

The International Falls School Board and Elks Lodge 1599 recently recognized recent students of the month. The board recognized Cohen Costley for March, Bailey Herberg and Max Dremmel for February, and Cadyn Zahn for November.

Several Broncos are included on the Iron Range Conference’s winter sports all-conference teams. In boys hockey, Colin Kostiuk, Max Dremmel, and Cooper Crandall were named all-conference while Matt Wherley and Braden Skifstad were named honorable mention.

March mourning

Mid-March, St. Urho’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day have come and gone; however, our Winter season keeps hanging around as we look longingly for Spring. Low temperatures have not been extreme this year but snow depths could still set records before flooding threatens.

Spring flood risk update

The potential for spring flooding across the northland is above normal, reports the National Weather Service last week. Conditions in the Rainy River Basin are similar to last year, when record flooding damaged roads and other public and private infrastructure.
