Mustangs offer spring session
Border Mustang Wrestling will offer a spring training and wrestling program, in response to family requests. “Us, as coaches, feel it’s a huge step in growing and getting more dominant,” said coach Jeremy Mann.
Planning ahead for spring levels
With an eye toward current conditions, an initial spring regulation plan for Rainy and Namakan lakes combines the previous high flood risk and standard rule curves for Rainy Lake, and are aimed at providing flexibility to direct dam operations as spring develops without having to employ a different rule curve. The International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Board’s Water Levels Committee established an initial spring regulation plan March 10 for Rainy and Namakan Lakes in accordance with a new temporary supplementary Order issued by the International Joint Commission March 3.
Hockey fun
A friendly little competition between local law officers and fire and EMS, now known as “Guns-NHoses,” brought a fire and EMS win, in a 9-8 shootout Tuesday at Bronco Arena. The event raised more than $2,000 for Friends Against Abuse. Below left, Mike Gedde scores for the fire side, at right a fire player is off his feet.

L-BF boys basketball
Littlefork-Big Falls Viking Tommy Larson scored the 1,000th point of his career March 9 when L-BF boys basketball played at North Woods in the opening round of the Section 7A tournament. The game was close early with the score tied at 12 but then the Grizzlies took control of the game and led 5229 at the half.
CO Reports
District 5 - Eveleth area March 13 CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) reports the recent snowstorm has extended the snowmobile season as the trails are back in great shape. Ice fishing on Rainy Lake continues, but the success rate is not so great, with small fish being caught. Enforcement action taken for the week included license issues. People are reminded that new angling license were needed March 1.
Master Gardeners’ favorite seeds
MASTER GARDENER Cold, snowy days are the days when many gardeners turn to their seed catalogs and dream about growing vegetables like the pictures therein so I asked the Master Gardener membership what varieties of vegetables they can’t live without. The list was amazing to me and I hope that it may help the readers pick varieties for the summer of 2023.
Board votes to close Indus School
The South Koochiching- Rainy River School Board March 8 voted to begin the process to close the Indus School. The action, on a 4-2 vote, took place in front of a full room attending the board meeting at the Indus School.
