Spring flood risk and insurance

With last week’s announcement of the higher than normal risk of spring flooding, the Insurance Federation of Minnesota, IFM, reminds property owners that spring flood season is fast approaching. According to the data, even if Minnesota just gets an average amount of snowfall in March and April, it will mean the state will have one of the 10 snowiest on record.

Grover recognized for excellence

International Falls Superintendent of Schools Kevin Grover has been recognized for excellence by the Minnesota Association of School Administrators. Grover was presented 2023 MASA Regional Administrators of Excellence Award for Region 7 at a statewide recognition ceremony during the MASA Spring Conference held March 9-10 in the Twin Cities.

Board votes to close Indus School

The South Koochiching- Rainy River School Board March 8 voted to begin the process to close the Indus School. The action, on a 4-2 vote, took place in front of a full room attending the board meeting at the Indus School.

The Rainy River baseball team lost a pair of games March 12 to Miles College. Game 1 was a 14-4 loss in five innings as Jesse Martinez went 2-3 with an RBI.

Shelter removal dates nearing

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds anglers the upcoming deadline to remove ice shelters from lakes in the northern one-third of the state is quickly approaching. Heavy snow and slush in some areas means conditions on the ice might be challenging, so the DNR urges anglers to plan ahead to ensure they’re able to meet the deadline.

CO Reports

District 5 - Eveleth area March 13 CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) reports the recent snowstorm has extended the snowmobile season as the trails are back in great shape. Ice fishing on Rainy Lake continues, but the success rate is not so great, with small fish being caught. Enforcement action taken for the week included license issues. People are reminded that new angling license were needed March 1.

Local projects in bonding bill proposal

Nearly $3 million for Borderland area projects were added last week to the Minnesota Senate’s bonding bill, bringing the total amount of northeast Minnesota funding in the proposed Senate bonding bill to approximately $57.11 million.

It’s a precarious thing what the freeze melt cycle of Spring brings to the table up here in the north country year after year. A sunny warm early March day and some dry pavement makes walking easy, until that is, until you round the corner of the building where the eaves have been dripping snow melt from the roof ever so slightly on to the pavement and the water runs across it to a driveway or street. When the late afternoon temperature drops the water solidifies and there you have it, a little patch of ice with a friction coefficient low enough to impress a physicist.
