Park plans cattail burns

Voyageurs National Park staff will in March and April burn selected wetlands in and near Black Bay Narrows, Cranberry Bay, and Alder Creek in Rainy Lake and Tom Cod, Irwin, and Daley bays in Kabetogama Lake. Activities include burning floating and rooted invasive hybrid cattails as well as other wetland areas to remove dead vegetation, rejuvenate wetland plant communities, and reduce woody plant encroachment, report park officials.

Sled off

Last Friday was a great day and way to learn about Newton’s Law of Motion at Bronco Hill. Kevin Erickson reports that Falls Elementary fifth graders designed and built a sled from cardboard and duct tape for the annual sled off.

LIFT celebrates new chapter

Jenna DeBenedet’s LIFT is ready for the next chapter, after growth in its infancy at Backus Community Center. LIFT, which DeBenedet has owned for the last two years, has moved to a new location in downtown International Falls, which appears to be experiencing a renaissance.

Making her mark

Indus school Senior Brea Hasbargen recently finished a mural of a giraffe by a tree in the Indus School library. High school art teacher Soren Olesen reported she selected the space to add some color, adding it helps students to have something interesting to look at while they sit and study in the library. She also wanted to paint something that would pique students’ curiosity and encourage them to use their imagination. Olesen said school officials hope Brea have some to use her multi-media artist skills and create another mural prior to May graduation. Brea serves as National Honor Society president and is involved in all the school sport. In the fall, she eaves for her Minnesota National Guard duties.

The pair of eagles in the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Nongame Wildlife Program EagleCam nest are incubating two eggs. The first egg was laid on Feb.

Trailer width

Question: Is it illegal for a vehicle pulling a trailer to have a ladder or ramp hanging from the side of the trailer? Answer: You are able to have ladders or ramps secured to the side of an enclosed trailer as long as you do not exceed the width of 8 feet 6 inches. This is the maximum dimension that may be operated on Minnesota roadways without a special permit.

Viking girls basketball

The Littlefork Big Falls girls basketball team Feb. 27 opened the Section 7A playoffs with a home game against the Wrenshall Wrens.

Grant goes to FHS

Falls High School and nine other groups have been awarded Northland Foundation’s Youth In Philanthropy Board awards, totaling $8,267. The grants were awarded to benefit children-and-youth led projects in region.

Auditions for Junior Bards

The Borealis Junior Bards, the youth theater program associated with Backus Community Center, will present a theatrical adaption of A. A. Milne’s “Winnie the Pooh” as its spring production May 26-28.
