Tourney Times

It’s last week of February, bringing annual televised state high school athletic tournaments beginning with girls’ hockey. Boys’ hockey and basketball will soon claim TV time at state level as sectional eliminations are now setting that stage. Old former athlete here began following this year’s TV “Tourney Times” by watching Warroad’s girls hockey team move into championship game once again. Old adrenaline still surged witnessing this level of competition with historical records.

L-BF students

Littlefork-Big Falls School officials have recognized their February 2023 student of the month. Representing the senior high is Trevor Galusha and the junior high Braydon Kurhais, reports Kathy Siltman, L-BF High School secretary.

Music & dancing Despite the fact that travel was difficult, many of the pioneers managed to bring musical instruments with them. The earliest reference to music was in regard to James Drummond from Aylesworth, Ontario, near Emo, who was later described as a “prominent resident” of International Falls.

Looking Back

The recent surge of contagious illness in Borderland is likely due more to stomach viruses than influenza, say local public health personnel. Vaccinations were only effective against 40 percent of influenza viruses, said Terry Ehrman, nurse manager of the Falls Memorial Hospital emergency room. Public Health Nurse Susan Congrave and Public School Nurse Doreen Swendsen emphasize that influenza vaccines are still a wise choice for everyone… Falls High School senior Jake Youso has been named to the 2008 Associated Press All-State Second Team. Youso has led the Broncos in scoring the last three seasons, led the Iron Range Conference in points this season with 33 goals and 36 assists, was a Mr. Hockey finalist, and a member of the St. Paul Pioneer Press third team. Broncos named for Honorable Mention were seniors Ladd Corrin and Eric Olson, junior Jace Baldwin, and sophomores Mike Hart, Matt Youso and Willie Corrin… The Rainy River Community College Voyageurs women’s hockey team captured the American Collegiate Hockey Association National Title with a 6-4 victory over the University of Minnesota- Duluth Bulldogs Sunday in Bensenville, Ill.

Auditions for Junior Bards

The Borealis Junior Bards, the youth theater program associated with Backus Community Center, will present a theatrical adaption of A. A. Milne’s “Winnie the Pooh” as its spring production May 26-28.

Falls police to move to Backus

International Falls officials are considering where to permanently house its police department, after terminating a joint Law Enforcement Center agreement with Koochiching County for space. The council on a 4-1 vote Feb.

Battle by the Border

The Vikings took an early lead March 2 but could not shake the Broncos as the score was 38-26 L-BF at the half in the Battle by the Border between Littlefork-Big Falls and International Falls boys basketball teams at the Falls High Gym.

Escape into a book

@YOUR LIBRARY March can be a up and down month. Some days seem like spring is around the corner and other days make us wonder if we’ll ever see warm weather again.

Let’s talk

It seems like it’s easier these days to post something to social media and hope for the best, rather than pick up the phone or sit down at a table to exchange information via human contact. It seems especially important to do that when it comes to our elected officials making decisions on projects and issues that affect the larger population.
