Ronnings has lots to celebrate

In recognition of its 60th year in business, the owners of Ronnings contributed to Northwest Community Action, which is also celebrating 60 years of service.Started in International Falls in 1964, Ronnings has expanded to include locations in Baudette, Roseau and Thief River Falls, said owners Garrett and Lauren Larson.NWCA provides services in all the communities Ronnings serves.

Financial institutions plan to combine to expand services

NATCOM Bancshares, Inc., the holding company for National Bank of Commerce and Great River Holding Company, the holding company for RiverWood Bank, recently announced they have entered into a definitive agreement for NATCOM to acquire Great River in an all-cash deal.A branch of RiverWood Bank is located at 503 Fourth St., International Falls.The sale of the transaction is expected to close in late 2024, with the conversion of accounts happening in early 2025, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals and the approval of Great River’s shareholders, reports National Bank of Commerce.The combined organization is expected to have approximately $2 billion in total assets with more than 250 employees across 12 counties in northern Wisconsin, central Minnesota, and northern Minnesota.“We have been looking for strategic opportunities to further expand National Bank of Commerce into greater Minnesota, and we believe we have found the ideal partner in RiverWood Bank,” said Brad Roden, CEO of National Bank of Commerce.

Aasen recognized for forestry work

A forest resource specialist with the Koochiching Soil and Water Conservation District has been recognized with the “Partnership Award” from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry.James Aasen was presented with the award - the highest level of recognition given by the division to partners and contributors to Minnesota forestry - at the annual DNR Summer Supervisors Meeting, July 31 in Brainerd.The award recognizes Aasen’s outstanding work with the DNR Division of Forestry in Cooperative Forest Management, or CFM, community forestry, landscape planning, and cross boundary management.“James’s tireless work has led to improved relationships, effective collaboration, and more work getting done on the ground,” said Ben West, DNR Forestry area supervisor.Aasen plays a prominent role within the Borderland forestry community, DNR officials said, citing the following details.As the chair of the Northern Landscape Committee, a volunteer, citizen-based regional landscape committee, central to carrying out the landscape management processes, Aasen pulls landscape partners together to facilitate cross boundary management and the free flow of information.Leading the Koochiching Cooperative Weed Management Group, Aasen has piloted many successful community projects and treatment of invasive species including buckthorn outreach and removal, as well as cross boundary management of wild parsnip.Aasen’s contributions to the CFM program are many, DNR officials said.

Jenny Herman is again working as a consultant with the Small Business Development Center.Herman met last week with the Koochiching Economic Development Board to discuss the position.She returned in May to the role she performed for the SBDC for nearly 10 years before working for Koochiching County.She provides free and confidential consultation, assisting entrepreneurs with start-ups, existing businesses, growing and managing businesses.

Essentia Health reports it has heard from multiple people recently who were contacted about fake employment opportunities by someone impersonating Essentia.In most instances, people reported receiving a job offer via social media.
