Dancers named national champions

Dancin’ with Darcie dancers were named national champions June 30 during a national finals competition in Duluth.Members of the “Starlites” dance group won the top award for their jazz performance of “Applause.” This award is a first for the studio owned by Darcie Schulz.“I could not be prouder of these dancers this past weekend,” Schulz said.In addition to the Starlites, dancers in Schulz’s “Sparklers” group took home third place for their jazz performance of “Fabulous.” Members of the “Stars” group also performed over the weekend.“Our groups performed five dances in total, and they all did an awesome job,” Schulz said.

One year later

It’s been a little more than one year since the International Falls Police Department moved to Backus Community Center as a temporary location, under a 2-year lease.Chief Mike Kostiuk said the move brought changes in how the department does things.“First, there has been no lapse in service, which is pretty admirable for our guys, and we’ve actually grown in a lot of areas we didn’t realize we needed to grow in,” he said.Investigations are growing more complex, as has local crime, he said.

Local group takes grief one step at a time

Grief: If you haven’t experienced it, you will.Like death and taxes, grief will likely be a part of everyone’s life, whether it be over the loss of a loved one or a lifestyle through divorce or retirement.Karen Kavan facilitates a grief support group, first held at Green Larsen funeral home and now at Backus Community Center.“It is free and open to anyone on a grief journey,” Kavan said, adding that it also helps her through her journey.She started her journey when her son Paul, 39, unexpectedly died peacefully in his sleep from an undiagnosed heart condition July 28, 2022.
