Looking Back

The recent surge of contagious illness in Borderland is likely due more to stomach viruses than influenza, say local public health personnel. Vaccinations were only effective against 40 percent of influenza viruses, said Terry Ehrman, nurse manager of the Falls Memorial Hospital emergency room. Public Health Nurse Susan Congrave and Public School Nurse Doreen Swendsen emphasize that influenza vaccines are still a wise choice for everyone… Falls High School senior Jake Youso has been named to the 2008 Associated Press All-State Second Team. Youso has led the Broncos in scoring the last three seasons, led the Iron Range Conference in points this season with 33 goals and 36 assists, was a Mr. Hockey finalist, and a member of the St. Paul Pioneer Press third team. Broncos named for Honorable Mention were seniors Ladd Corrin and Eric Olson, junior Jace Baldwin, and sophomores Mike Hart, Matt Youso and Willie Corrin… The Rainy River Community College Voyageurs women’s hockey team captured the American Collegiate Hockey Association National Title with a 6-4 victory over the University of Minnesota- Duluth Bulldogs Sunday in Bensenville, Ill.

Derby day

Cooper Jensen and Robert Raukohl hoist some fish into the air Saturday after registering them at the Rainy Lake Sportfishing Club 38th Annual Ice Fishing Derby. The derby drew thousands to Rainy Lake’s Sandbay for The club’s biggest fundraiser of the year. About 245 fish were caught and registered in the derby, said reports at the end of day. The Indus Homecoming Court included Queen Cory Black, Queen Janine Johnson, Prince Ilya Letyagin, Princess Megan Munro, sophomore attendant Calli Erickson, and sophomore attendant Randy Jones… Services were conducted February 27 for Raymond D. Berg, 81, who died on February 23 in Duluth. Berg was an artist, art teacher in area schools, sports advocate, cultivator of music and the theater, traveler and tour director, dean of students and president of Rainy River Community College.

The Bronco boys’ swimming and diving team participated in the Section 4A Qualifying Meet in Hibbing. “We had a very high rate of faster swim times from all of the boys,” Bronco head coach Chad Shoberg said. Senior Raph Gelo is the only individual swimmer that qualified, Gelo qualified in the 50 freestyle. The 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay teams also qualified for the Finals Meet that will be held in Hibbing. “Raph’s 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay are our best shot at state right now,” Shoberg said. “Next Saturday the divers get their chance.”
