“Crown Lands,” Juno Award winners in 2021 for “Breakthrough Group of the Year” as well as nominees for “Rock Album of the Year,” will bring their acoustic act to Fort Frances on Saturday, March 18 at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 29.
An expanded holiday program this year allowed for more local veterans to receive delivery of meal packages. United Way of Northeastern Minnesota’s annual United for Veterans holiday meal package delivery was able to provide more meal packages this year with the help of more volunteers and fundraising, said UWNEMN Community Impact Coordinator Michelle Lampton.
The Bronco boys’ hockey team returned from a tournament in Rochester, MN, with three straight overtime victories and a firstplace trophy. The Broncos opened the Kiwanis/ Wells Fargo Classic with a 4-3 overtime win over the Richfield Spartans. The Broncos continued their tournament success with a 3-2 win over Rochester Lourdes. The championship game pitted the Broncos against the Albert Lea Tigers in and the Broncos emerged victorious despite much of the game play being dominated by the Tigers. The girls’ hockey team took thirdplace honors in the Kasson/Dodge County Girls Tournament this past weekend in Rochester. After a 7-3 victory over Fond du Lac, WI, the Broncos lost a game to St. Paul United by a score of 0-3. The girls rebounded from their loss to defeat the Central WI Storm 2-1 in overtime.
Santa, Mrs. Claus and their friends arrive in many different places under all types of modes of travel. Mike and Patty Melander, from Menahga, Saturday brought Santa, Mrs., and his helpers, along with his sleigh, to Littlefork by semi-truck and trailer. The Santa Truck, as it’s known, brings the Santa crew to small communities in Minnesota during December. It’s the third year they’ve transported Santa to Littlefork.
Continuing a tradition started years ago by a local Santa and his wife, another Santa and Mrs. Claus during the month of December waved from the window at 445 Fourth St., International Falls, at folks passing by.
Even without the decorations of the holidays, the community of Ranier, nestled between Rainy Lake and Rainy River, appears ready to be featured on a Christmas card. .
Food plays a big part in many holiday traditions, so it can be tricky to control portions and keep from overeating during the holiday season. A registered dietitian at Baylor College of Medicine offers some tips to enjoy the meal without getting stuffed. “Holidays are times when we tend to ‘eat with our eyes’ because everything looks so delicious,” said Roberta Anding, registered dietitian with Baylor. “Since it’s a special time, you can either take smaller portions of foods or think of which ones are your favorites and truly holiday specials. For example, you might be able to have mashed potatoes any time but your grandmother’s amazing cornbread dressing is a once-a-year treat. In this case, choose what you love and skip the other foods.”
15 years ago Bronko Nagurski has been chosen for the “MN 150 Exhibit” as one of the 150 people or things that shaped Minnesota history. Among Bronko’s accomplishments: He was the only collegiate player ever to be named a consensus All-American at two positions – offense fullback and defense tackle.
