Celebrating Coach Nordquist

Longtime Bronco coach, Stuart Nordquist said he was overwhelmed by the dedication of the football field at Sports Stadium named in his honor Friday.“I never expected anything like this to ever be done,” he told the Rainy Lake Gazette prior to the ceremony held at halftime of the Bronco’s blowout win over Ely.The Bronco’s home opening win seemed appropriate for the evening that honors a coach who had 21 football championships out of 41 years of coaching and led the Broncos to all seven of their Minnesota State High School League State Tournament appearances (1988, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1994, 2000, and 2005).Nordquist came to International Falls in 1974 to take the head coaching job, and with the exception of the 2000 and 2001 seasons he coached the Broncos from 1974 to 2009.He was humble talking about the dedication and his achievements at the helm of the Broncos football team, as well as coach of boys basketball and girls track.
