No recommendation on pier project

The Ranier City Council is scheduled to meet this week to consider the lack of a recommendation from its Land Use Planning Commission to approve a conditional use permit with conditions for a public pier project with conditions.The commission vote failed at a March 14 hearing on the permit request.

Chamber voices border station plan concerns

A plan to construct a $28 million border crossing station in International Falls will be presented to businesses and the public March 19, in meetings organized by the International Falls Area Chamber of Commerce.The information about the project will be presented by staff of the General Services Administration, which acts as the federal government’s procurement agency.A 9 a.m.

Ice rescue

The International Falls Fire and Resue team got some action Saturday when members rescued a dog from the Rainy River, where it had difficulty getting to shore because of ice.It’s a good reminder to know where your children and your pets are as ice in area rivers and lakes deteriorates.And it’s a reminder that the community’s emergency responders must get into that water to rescue pets and people.

City considers facility needs

The International Falls City Council Monday met briefly, before closing the session to discuss labor negotiation strategy with its attorney.During he regular meeting, the council approved a letter of support for the Voyageur Country ATV Club’s state bonding request to improve the Blue Ox trail between International Falls and Big Falls.It also agreed to advertise for 2024 seasonal employees and accepted a recommendation from police Chief Mike Kostiuk to promote Logan Hulst, who has been with the department since January 2020, to sergeant.In addition, it heard reports, including from Councilor Tim Wegner, who said after committee talk, it’s been found that municipal cannabis sales may not be as lucrative as it may have earlier seemed.Councilor Pete Kalar reported that Kerry Park Arena was recently shut down because a compressor broke down and needs replacing, something the Kerry Park upgrade plan would address.Mayor Harley Droba credited the professionalism of Falls police and other area law officers in handling a situation near his residence involving a resident that had holed up in a house, after a struggle with police officers.
