Board extends timber permits

With abnormal winter conditions challenging access to some timber sales, the Koochiching County Board Tuesday approved a no fee one year extension for all timber permits expiring in 2024 including permits already in extension.Land Commissioner Nathan Heibel told the board the extension affects about 60 permits. The board agreed that permits reaching their initial expiration date in 2024 will have the 20 percent additional down payment waived as well.“It’s ironic we are talking about it today,” when outside a storm was blowing in what could be the most snow received this winter locally. The problem is lack of frost that makes access roads unusable.“It’s the winter that hasn’t been so far,” Heibel said.Loggers are cutting higher ground aspen now, in places that can be accessed without winter roads.
