Skoe recognized by KSWCD

Wayne Skoe was selected posthumously as the 2023 Koochiching County Outstanding Forest Steward.His selection by the Koochiching Soil and Water Conservation District highlights the importance of conservation practices to protect Minnesota’s land and water resources and recognizing those leading the efforts on their own land.Each year, the state’s SWCDs recognize individuals and organizations for outstanding accomplishments in implementing conservation practices and improving Minnesota’s natural resources.Skoe was chosen for the recognition for a multitude of reasons, SWCD staff report: He was a long-standing advocate of sustainable forestry and the folks that depend on forest resources in northern Minnesota.

RLMC plans for new facility

A new clinic and hospital planned for property owned by Rainy Lake Medical Center between Rainy River and Highway 11 east should take the community into the next 50 years.“It’s exciting,” said Robb Pastor, RLMC CEO.“The goal of the new facility is to make sure we’ve got something that will last another 50 years, with room to expand,” he added.Also a part of the goal for the new facility is to bring more services here so people don’t have to travel, he said.

Last meeting of 2023

In the last meeting of 2023, the Koochiching County Board Tuesday approved a 2024 levy of 18 percent more than it collected in 2023, which will provide $6.5 million.Board Chairman Jason Sjoblom said no one wanted to set the levy increase that high, but it was required to handle a few changes in funds balances, which should improve in coming years.

Tree traditions

What started as a windbreak for a local family more than 30 years ago has become a Christmas tradition for many Borderland families and students over the years.Saunders U-Cut Tree Farm, owned and operated by Pam and Gary Saunders on Town Road 208, is now for many a place to kick off the holidays and come home with a Christmas tree.This year is no different.Katie Winkel’s fourth grade class at Falls Elementary School last week visited the tree farm, making a group effort at cutting a tree and sharing some photos.This year’s fourth graders are part of a tradition that started when teacher Kevin Erickson taught fourth grade and asked if he could bring his class.

County presents budget plan
