The Koochiching County Board Tuesday agreed to fund its share of the 2024 budget for the Falls International Airport. The board approved $351,466, an increase of 6.28 percent over the 2023 amount provided by the county. The county and city of International Falls jointly own the airport, and it is managed by the International Falls-Koochiching County Airport Commission made up of county, city and at large representatives.A joint powers agreement calls for the city and county to evenly share expenses of the airport, however International Falls officials have indicated the city will fund the airport at $175,000 for 2024.That leaves the airport with a $176,466 budget shortfall for 2024, explained Thor Einarson, airport manager and Kyra Hasbargen, airport commission administrative secretary.Einarson and Hasbargen reported Tuesday on airport activities and its economic contributions to the community. They noted the county’s share of the 2024 operations budget is $266,966, capital projects is $58,000 and capital improvements of $25,000, totally the amount approved by the board.Board Chair Jason Sjoblom called the airport a community asset, and described the investment in recent years by state and county sources for airport improvements.“To not fund it would be a detriment to the community,” he said.Commissioners Destry Hell, Ricky Roche and Adam McIntyre agreed.Finding out the city would not fund the airport at its share a little over a month before the budgets need to be finalized feels like the “rug being pulled out,” Sjoblom said.
