Grover recalls local cyberattack

The International Falls school district caught a cyber-attack in September before the extortionists were able to encrypt private information from the school’s systems. The district lost one day of school Sept 12 when Superintendent Kevin Grover shut down the district, canceled school, and reported the district, along with its third-party incident response team, was investigating a potential cyber incident relating to its computer systems.

St. Louis County: Three years of COVID response

Three years ago this week, facing growing concerns about a new and highly contagious virus, St. Louis County activated its Emergency Operations Center. The county board declared a local state of emergency. Numerous events were canceled, and buildings closed to public access - to limit the virus’ spread allow time to plan. A few days later came news of the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in St. Louis County.

Birchdale or Baudette? Mail using the city of Birchdale in an address, must include 56623 zip code. A typo and misunderstanding about the Birchdale zip code between postal departments caused inaccurate information to be shared in a Postal Service media statement a couple weeks ago.

City leases Backus space for IFPD

The International Falls City Council Monday approved on a 4-1 vote a 2-year lease with Backus Community Center for space on its third floor to temporarily house the Falls Police Department. Councilor Pete Kalar voted no, saying earlier he preferred the law enforcement in the community to be housed together.

Planning ahead for spring levels

With an eye toward current conditions, an initial spring regulation plan for Rainy and Namakan lakes combines the previous high flood risk and standard rule curves for Rainy Lake, and are aimed at providing flexibility to direct dam operations as spring develops without having to employ a different rule curve. The International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Board’s Water Levels Committee established an initial spring regulation plan March 10 for Rainy and Namakan Lakes in accordance with a new temporary supplementary Order issued by the International Joint Commission March 3.
