Area voters have a chance to find out about candidates seeking state and local positions next week at candidate forums in the community. A forum will be offered from 6-8 p.m.
A special election will be held April 11 to fill the Koochiching County Commissioner District 3 position, left vacant with the resignation of Commissioner Terry Murray. The county board in September accepted Murray’s resignation, which cited medical issues.

A campaign flier in area mailboxes this weekend contained false information, says the Koochiching County DFL chairman. It’s the reason voters need to do their homework carefully, he said.
The International Falls City Council Monday approved a pay equity implementation report and agreed to submit it to the state. The action followed a closed session to discuss with consultants the report that staff have been preparing since 2019.
Jan Anderson Budris said she’s had a special connection with veterans since talks as a young child with her uncle Roy, a World War I veteran, who lived in Cook. “We talked about the war and the impact to him, going from a farm in Cook, a very quiet life, to going overseas, and he talked about sadness and mustard gas,” she said.
On Wednesday, Sept. 28 Rotarians Jeff Hardwig and Carol Grim gave an update on actions related to the club’s Love of Reading Early, or LORE, program and a grant they are working on to request funds to move the program to the next level. The program works to encourage families to work with their young children to read and make it a fun, essential part of their daily life.
Kate Stadum King recently came across this photo taken in 1975 that was published in the newspaper about the all-girl rock band she was in, called “Ana Pearl.” “Our band was together for 6 years playing at clubs, dances, prom nights and wedding receptions in northern Minnesota,” she shared. Members included Judy Armstrong Briggs, Dixie Day Juel, Sue Rosenthal Frank, Kate Stadum King and Sheri Jonson Johnson and Carol Niemi was also a member for two years and has since passed away last May. “We played a mix of top ‘40, ‘50s rock, country and soul music,” she shared. “We also performed original tunes written by member Sue, ‘I’m A Sinner’ and ‘Why Am I Sitting Here?’ to name a few.”
