Lift bridge project poses questions

As equipment has rolls into Ranier toward the rail lift bridge, members of the International Rainy Lake of the Woods Watershed Board said they appreciate the concerns voiced in a letter received about potential bridge modifications and how those modifications could affect the flow of water in vicinity of the bridge. Advisory support to the board Karl Jansen, Scott Jutila and Abby Moore stopped in Ranier for a quick talk with the Gazette editor Tuesday on their way to Kenora and Morrison to discuss flood impacts there. The board members said this week the letter sent by the Ranier City Council about the Canadian National Railway’s lift bridge in Ranier was shared with the International Joint Commission.

Falls Rotary offers ‘welcoming’ speaker series

The Welcoming Community Initiative of the International Falls Rotary Club invites the community to attend a speaker series dedicated to preparing for the future vitality of the community. The club’s Welcoming Community Initiative plans four speaker events this fall and winter with the first one being Wednesday, Oct. 19. the first presentations will focus on changes in demographics affecting the diversity of people living in Minnesota and how some communities have prepared to welcome this change, according to a release from the organizing committee. Later presenters will speak on their perspectives as members of under-represented groups in the northland.

Rotary presents….

On Wednesday, Sept. 14 the Rotary Club of International Falls hosted Don Nech. Nech has been a benefactor to the club’s Love of Reading Early , or LORE, Program, donating on a regular basis to the program that provides books to youth in our community. Jeff Hardwig is the local Rotarian advocate for LORE along with a working committee.

Vets drop-in center at Backus

LBeager@cherryroad.com Koochiching County veterans will soon be able to drop-in at Backus Community Center to connect with other veterans and community resources. The county board Tuesday approved a lease agreement at $75 per month to use classroom 208, on the southeastern corner, for a veterans drop-in center funded by a Veteran Suicide Prevention Project awarded to the county a few years ago.

Rotary presents…

Developing positive culture changes among Rainy Lake Medical Center team members was the focus of a presentation at a recent Rotary of International Falls meeting, reports president Bob DeGross. Brian Rauzi, Rotarian and chief operating officer of Rainy Lake Medical Center; and his guest Andrea Pastor, RLMC director of special projects and strategic initiatives, shared with Rotary members one of the efforts.
