Joy, grief, fun, pain, excitement, fear, panic, and warmth: Just a few of the feelings that operating a family farm brings to each member – sometimes in quick succession. Bradley and Melody Nicholson’s family, Koochiching County’s 2022 Farm Family of the Year, know well those emotions.
Teams from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Small Business Administration, Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management this week began door to door assessments in several areas in Koochiching County to help local response teams determine assistance programs available to those impacted by flooding.
Members of the Restorative Justice work crew from the Challenge Incarceration Program, or CIP, at the Minnesota Correctional Facilities in Togo and Willow River assisted with flood relief efforts in Koochiching and St. Louis counties.
The Koochiching County Board last week approved a Flood Debris/Waste Management Plan for properties assessed to have flood damage and do not have insurance coverage. “Koochiching County is committed to helping residents that have flood-related debris/waste in response to this historic disaster,” said Matthew Gouin, director, county Environmental Services.

With at least 10,000 yards of sand and up to 1 million sandbags that need cleaning up, several plans to assist county residents have been put in place. This week, the Koochiching County Board approved a flood-related solid waste plan that will involve contracting with private haulers in the cleanup stage.
