Following weekend storm downpours that added inches of rain to the basin, causing wind, hail and saturating soil, local officials are dealing with an unprecedented emergency as area lakes are expected to reach record-breaking levels.

Rainy Lake surpassed the 2014 flood level May22 and could easily reach the historic levels of the 1950 flood, Koochiching County Sheriff Perryn Hedlund said. Hedlund and county Engineer Dave Reimer met with the county board Tuesday morning for a flood update; the updates will continue each Tuesday until the waters recede.

A partnership that purchased the bridge that connects Fort Frances and International Falls was celebrated Saturday. Aazhogan Limited Partnership, a partnership of Rainy River First Nations, and the BMI Group acquired the International Bridge, securing full ownership of the landmark toll bridge and international border crossing by the two partners.
